Introduction

Being able to understand and write safety rules and regulations is an important part of our working lives. The employer and employees should be aware of health and safety problems at a workplace. This week we will look at some harms and injuries caused by unsafe working conditions. We will learn another way of expressing cause and result.

Outcomes:
After this unit you should be able to:
  • describe harms and injuries,
  • describe unsafe working environment,
  • express cause and effect when talking about safety,
  • understand texts about health and safety law,
  • be able to explain health and safety problems and suggest some ways of preventing them.

Tasks and Dates

This unit consists of six activities. In the first activity you will brainstorm some injuries and harms. Then you will look at changing words with positive meaning to words with negative meaning. After that you will study different ways of expressing cause and effect relationship when talking about safety. You will read an article called “Health and Safety Law” and complete the reading comprehension questions. Finally, you will discuss how to prevent harms and injuries at your workplace.

Activity One

In this activity you will work in a forum and answer the two questions below.

First look at the injuries and harms. Can you add some more to the list? Publish your answers in FORUM 5.1tired
- broken or fractured bones
- RSI (repetitive strain injuries)
- back problems
- fatigue
_____

_____
_____

Now think about a workplace (an office, a workshop or laboratory). What could the injuries and harms from exercise 1 be caused by? Watch the video and list the causes of accidents mention there.

Then add your own to the list.
E.g. lifting heavy equipment, discomfort, lack of support for a wrist or elbow, ...
Publish your answers in FORUM 5.1 as well.

Activity Two

Words with negative meaning are often used to describe health and safety risks. Complete the sentences below by adding one of the prefixes with negative meaning: in -, non -, dis -, un -, and im -.
Try to write your answers down on a piece of paper first and then go to QUIZ 5.2 - PREFIXES to see what you can remember.

  1. ____adequate light leads to low vision.
  2. Many injuries are caused by ____sufficient or ______proper training.
  3. Equipment that requires ___natural and ____necessary movements causes fatigue.
  4. Badly chosen chairs can cause ____comfort and lead to injuries.
  5. ____tidy workbenches can cause ___ safe working conditions.
  6. Some accidents are due to _____ organized workplaces and _____safe conditions.
  7. RSI can result from _______proper wrist or elbow support.

Read the sentences in exercise above again. In each sentence underline a verb that expresses cause and result. Then use the verbs to complete the gaps below.

E.g.
Lack of training can result in strain injuries.

be ______________by
_________________
_____________ in
_____________ to
be _______________ to
________________ from

Activity Three

In pairs look at the list of injuries from activity 1. Explain the cause of each injury using the verbs from activity 2 and suggest ways to prevent the problem (use should or must). Publish your answers in FORUM 5.3 .

E.g. Inadequate back support can cause back strain. Each worker must be provided with an adjustable chair.

Activity Four

Every employer has to look after its employees’ health and safety. What do you think the employers are responsible for? Brainstorm some ideas and publish them in FORUM 5.4.

Activity Five

Now read the text and answer the questions.

Health and Safety Law

What you need to know:
• All workers have a right to work in places where risks to their health and safety are properly controlled.
• Health and safety is about stopping you getting hurt at work or ill through work.
• Your employer is responsible for health and safety, but you must help.

What employers must do for you:
1. Decide what could harm you in your job and the precautions to stop it. This is part of risk assessment.
2. In a way you can understand, explain how risks will be controlled and tell you who is responsible for this.
3. Consult and work with you and your health and safety representatives in protecting everyone from harm in the workplace.
4. Free of charge, give you the health and safety training you need to do your job.
5. Free of charge, provide you with any equipment and protective clothing you need, and ensure it is properly looked after.
6. Provide toilets, washing facilities and drinking water.
7. Provide adequate first-aid facilities.
8. Report major injuries and fatalities at work to our Incident Contact Centre. Report other injuries, diseases and dangerous incidents online at www.hse.gov.uk.
9. Have insurance that covers you in case you get hurt at work or ill through work. Display a hard copy or electronic copy of the current insurance certificate where you can easily read it.
10. Work with any other employers or contractors sharing the workplace or providing employees (such as agency workers), so that everyone’s health and safety is protected

Questions:

1 How should the control of risks be explained?
2 What should be provided free of charge?
3 Where are fatalities reported?
4 What should be displayed so everyone could read it?

In your own words, explain the words below:

insurance ___________________________________________________________________
provide somebody with ________________________________________________________
protective clothing ____________________________________________________________
provide something ____________________________________________________________

Activity Six

First, watch the video on safety to get some inspiration and then think about the questions below.

What can cause health and safety problems in your school or work? Describe at least five problems. Explain their causes and suggest some ways to prevent the problems. Publish your answers in FORUM 5.5
