The course is taught in English. Its aim is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical foundations of European law, its development, institutions, and specific form in the Czech Republic.

The course covers EU institutions, their status and competences, their relationship to national authorities, and their functional interconnection. After a general definition of the main institutions, the lecture focuses on the key features and principles of EU law, which largely derive from the case law of the CJEU. The concept and significance of the individual categories of fundamental rights of citizens of Member States and EU citizens, as well as the related relationships between public authorities and individuals and the supranational aspects of EU law and judicial procedures for the protection of natural and legal persons before the EU courts. The course should enable students to understand the position of EU law as a distinct branch of law, which nevertheless forms an integral part of all legal systems of EU member states.

The participation of Erasmus students and a comparison of different legal approaches to the issues discussed are expected.
