The course is taught in English to help students develop the skills needed to apply the law in an international professional environment, with particular regard to potential labour mobility within the EU. Students will become familiar with the fundamental mechanisms of European judicial cooperation in civil matters and their practical implications for legal practice.
The course is designed as an extension of the compulsory courses European Union Law I and European Union Law II, or their English-language equivalents, Basics in EU Law I and Basics in EU Law II. It focuses on the application of the Brussels I bis, Brussels II bis, Rome I and Rome II Regulations, as well as the regulations governing the taking of evidence and the service of documents. It also covers the procedures for European Small Claims and European Orders for Payment, and introduces the basic rules of cross-border insolvency proceedings.
Teaching is practice-oriented. Students will receive study materials in advance and work through cases during seminars. The course also anticipates the participation of Erasmus students and will compare different legal approaches to the issues discussed.
