The course is taught in English. Its aim is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical foundations of European law, its development, key legal concepts, and its application in the Czech Republic. The course covers the institutions of the European Union, their status and competences, their relationship with national authorities, and the ways in which they interact.

Following an introduction to the core concepts, the course focuses on the principal features and principles of EU law, many of which have been developed through the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union. It examines the nature and significance of the various categories of fundamental rights held by nationals of Member States and EU citizens, as well as the relationship between public authorities and individuals and the supranational dimensions of EU law. The course also addresses the procedural avenues available to natural and legal persons seeking judicial protection before the courts of the European Union.

The course is designed to help students understand EU law as a distinct body of law that nevertheless forms an integral part of the legal systems of all EU Member States. Participation by Erasmus students is anticipated, allowing for a comparison of different legal approaches to the issues discussed.
