2. Three methods to reference sources
1. paraphrase 2. summary 3. quotation
A PARAPHRASE IS...
- your own rendition of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else, presented in a new form
- one legitimate way (when accompanied by accurate documentation) to borrow from a source
- a more detailed restatement than a summary, which focuses concisely on a single main idea
A SUMMARY ...
- puts the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main point(s)
- is attributed to the original source
- is significantly shorter than the original
- takes a broad overview of the source material.
A QUOTATION ...
- is identical to the original
- uses a narrow segment of the source
- matches the source document word for word
- is always attributed to the original author
