AML19

The AML19 course presents a complete summary of the most significant characteristics of the literary, cultural, and social development of the USA during the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on cultural, ethnical, and genre diversity.

The first segment of the course will focus on literary and cultural development in regards to the 19th century, namely the chronological and intellectual specifics concerning the rise of the American novel (establishment of a prosaic tradition by Ch. B. Brown, Washington Irving), the attempt to create the American legend in the works of J.F. Cooper, the Gothic styles of Ch. B. Brown, E.A. Poe), the basis of transcendentalism (R.W. Emerson, D.H. Thoreau), late Romanticism (N. Hawthorne, H. Melville), the birth of modern poetry (W. Whitman, E. Dickinson), Regionalism (M. Twain), Realism (D. Howells, H. James) and Naturalism (F. Norris, S. Crane, T. Dreiser, J. London).

An integral part of the course is also the introduction of African American literature. The second segment of the course will deal with the developmental periods and concepts of American poetry of the 20th century and modern American literature in general (the Lost Generation, E. Hemingway, H. Miller, F.S. Fitzgerald, S. Lewis, J. Steinbeck, E. Caldwell, and so forth).

Základy projektové práce

Tento předmět si klade za cíl seznámit studenty s vybranými specifiky a úskalími, která s sebou přináší práce na samostatných projektech (např. seminární práce, bakalářské a diplomové práce, atd.) v akademickém prostředí.

Studenti si osvojí základy vědecké práce a naučí se, jak správně postupovat při práci na projektu. Dále si procvičí kulturu jazykového projevu s důrazem na vytváření odborných písemných projevů v českém a cizím jazyce.

Kurz je věnován také základním postupům při zpracování textu, včetně typografických a citačních norem, vytváření bibliografických záznamů, práci s obrázky a tabulkami apod. Základním cílem předmětu je však uplatnit teoretické znalosti nabyté v kurzu v praxi, a to v rámci vypracování vlastního semestrálního projektu na vybrané téma.

Současná americká literatura (CAL)

The CAL is an introductory course into the contemporary American literature. It gives the basic overview of the American literary tendencies from the 1950s till present and provides students with the information on the main representatives of contemporary American drama, poetry, fiction as well as non-fiction. The course is set in the context of contemporary American realia and culture.

Současná britská literatura (CBL)

The CBL is an introductory course into the modern British literature. It gives the basic overview of the British literary tendencies from the 1950s till present and provides students with the information on the main representatives of contemporary British drama, poetry, fiction as well as non-fiction. The course is set in the context of contemporary British realia and culture.
