14. SLD diagnostics

14.1. Dilemmas of the discrepancy criterion in the diagnosis of SLD

  • Discrepancy (lat. Dis-crepare, to be in dispute, not to tune together- contradiction, disagreement
  • dyslexia diagnosis criterion - difference between quantification of mental abilities (IQ) and reading level (RQ) difference greater than 20 points
  • Objections:
    • basic categorical: quantification evaluates only dually (disorder present - absent), no continuum
    • psychometric: load measurement error
    • practical: difficult to use in borderline cases, in the youngest children
    • Cognitive-Psychological: Reading is not dependent on intelligence, but on the development of cognitive functions. Verbal intelligence is related to comprehension rather than the ability to read.

Tracking the IQ of good readers (sometimes below 80) or average (sometimes above 130).

A better indicator of disorders is an understanding of the content read and heard.
