Forum: Extracting of Oil and Energy in General
Answer at least two of the following questions and respond to at least one contribution of a fellow student.
1) As stated in one of the tasks in U1b, horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is not just used in the oil industry, but also for burying pipes or underground cables. Have you ever had a chance to see this technology with your own eyes? In your opinion, what are its advantages? Are there any disadvantages?
2) In the commercial by Shell, Japp says that there is no easy oil any longer. What will oil be replaced by after we run out of it? How will the production of plastics be affected?
3) According to the Ecotricity website, fossil fuel deposits will be depleted soon: our known gas reserves only give us just 52 years left, our known oil deposits could run out in just over 53 years and our known coal deposits could be gone in 150 years. How are we going to generate electricity then? In your opinion, what is the best way?
4) The issue of producing energy seems to be vital for our future. Is there a chance that scientists (and not just the mainstream ones) will discover a completely new method of generating electricity? In fact, YouTube is full of videos showing weird ways to get some energy, for example, the one at youtube. What do you think: could this work or not? Why?
