Choosing the Right Strategy

Think about a real communication situation you have experienced in your academic, professional, or personal life where a misunderstanding occurred.

Reflect on the following questions:

  1. Briefly describe the situation (50–100 words).
  2. What made communication difficult?
  3. Which of the four strategies (summarising, paraphrasing, simplifying, or reformulating) would have been the most effective in that situation? Explain why.
  4. How might using this strategy have changed the outcome of the conversation?

There is no single “correct” strategy: the most effective choice depends on the context, the communication barrier, and the needs of the people involved. Whether you chose summarising, paraphrasing, simplifying, or reformulating, what matters is being able to explain why the strategy is appropriate and how it can facilitate understanding.

As you encounter new communication challenges, consider which strategy or combination of strategies can best support mutual understanding.
