In social science, a social group is defined as two or more people who are joined together by some shared bond or affinity. Different types of groups may overlap with one another. Also, a given individual may belong to more than one group, although he may identify with one group more deeply than another.

We distinguish between small and large social groups. Small social groups (up to 30 members) have a longer influence on the individual. Large social groups (over 60 members) have a very intense, but only a situational impact on the individual. These are crowds, for example. Within this definition (30-60) social groups may seem like small or large.
