Coming Next: Tier 2 – Participatory Tools and Process Design (4 hours)

In the next course, you will move from understanding participation to practicing it in person on campus in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Details on how to apply will be sent be sent to the email address you provided during registration.

This hands-on course will help you develop practical skills in selecting and applying participatory tools and designing participatory processes for post-conflict Bosnia and Herzegovina. Working in groups on a real urban project and using authentic stakeholder data, you will experiment with tools such as participatory mapping, voting, and the Charette method.

Through tool stations, collaborative design work, and cross-group facilitation simulations, you will critically assess which tools are appropriate for different situations and learn how to design more inclusive participatory processes in complex and divided urban contexts.

To join, you should have completed “Citizen Participation in Post-conflict Urban Contexts – Tier 1”, equivalent coursework in participatory planning or deliberative democracy, or have professional experience in community engagement or participatory processes. A prerequisite for participation is proficiency in Bosnian, Croatian, or Serbian language.

What to Expect?

Expect a practical, interactive course where you will learn by doing. You will try out participatory tools, work with different stakeholder perspectives, and make decisions about which approaches fit different situations.

You will also practice dealing with conflict, power imbalances, unexpected reactions, and changing group dynamics. Rather than looking for one “perfect” method, you will learn how to adapt, make informed choices, and explain why you chose a particular approach.

In short, expect to experiment, discuss, solve problems, and practice facilitation in realistic post-conflict scenarios.
