Norms
Norms are closely related to values, because values act as a criterion, norm, stimulus, regulatory element of behavior.
- Individual value orientation must be subordinated to group.
- Norms can be written (eg laws), but also unwritten. Unwritten norms are derived from the customs and traditions of a social group.
- Major violations of group norms are sanctioned.
Group sanctions
Group sanctions are usually applied in the following order:
1. The group blocks access to information to the individual, thereby reducing his or her influence on the group.
2. The group restricts communication with the individual. This stops satisfying the socio-psychological needs of the individual.
3. The group excludes the individual. However, this step very often does not occur, because the individual leaves the group alone under the influence of pressure.
