About the course designer
Hello everyone and thank you for landing on this course!
I am Vanessa Marcella and I am very happy to welcome you to this EUPeace Soft Skills course on Mediation.
First of all, I would like to introduce myself: I teach English for Specific and Academic Purposes at the University of Calabria, and I hold a PhD in Applied Linguistics. My research adopts an interdisciplinary perspective that combines linguistic analysis, digital communication studies, sustainability discourse, and innovative educational methodologies to explore how language contributes to shaping environmental awareness, social inclusion, cultural identities, and learning practices in contemporary digital and academic contexts.
The title of the course is Bridging voices because it reflects the central role of mediation in connecting people who speak different languages and come from different cultural backgrounds. Sometimes this means communicating through a Lingua Franca; at other times, it involves moving between languages. In both cases, effective communication goes beyond simply conveying information. It requires adapting and interpreting messages according to the social, cultural, and contextual factors that shape communication.
This skill is known as Mediation. It enables us to facilitate communication, build shared understanding, and convey information in ways that are meaningful, accessible, and effective.
Throughout this course, you will explore the concept of mediation as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). You will examine its role in intercultural communication, become familiar with a range of mediation strategies, and discover practical techniques that can be applied in social, educational, cultural, linguistic, and professional contexts.
The aim of this course is to help you further develop the knowledge and skills needed to communicate effectively across languages and cultures in different situations.
I invite you to approach this course with curiosity and an open mind, actively participate in the activities, and reflect on how the ideas and skills you develop can contribute to your professional journey.
I hope you will enjoy it!
