1. Active part in the classes, which includes having studied the individual lectures and being prepared for the following discussion about individual topics;
2. Seminar paper - the syntactic analysis of an original English text of 250 - 300 words (taken from fiction, newspapers...)
Exam:
Passing the test focusing on the theory as well on application of theoretical knowledge of the syntax of an English sentence (the acceptable score: 75 % of the total number of points)

The goals of the course are:
- to enable students to look upon the English language from the point of view of its historical development;
- to provide general characteristics of relevant changes in the individual linguistic areas, mainly in phonology, grammar and vocabulary (internal history of English), with reference to the changes in the social, economic and cultural development of the society which either directly or indirectly influenced the development of its language (external history of English);
- to draw students’ attention to the changes of the language caused by the influence of other foreign languages (Greek, Latin, French, Scandinavian) on phonology, grammar and vocabulary;
- to outline the typical features of individual stages in the development of the language, i. e. Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English and Present Day English.
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- reproduce information about the form of the language in the individual stages of its development;
- describe the consequences of the influence of foreign languages upon English in a particular period of its development;
- comprehend certain regularities in the development of English, the contemporary status of English including some tendencies in its further development by applying the two-fold viewpoint: linguistic and social-historical.

The course is intended for international students and is taught in English. Its aim is to introduce students to contemporary approaches to addressing ethnic diversity and the protection of minority rights at both national and international levels.
At the beginning of the course, key concepts such as ethnicity, ethnic groups, nationality, multiethnic states, ethnic diversity, ethnic conflict, and ethnopolitical mobilization will be introduced. These will be presented alongside contemporary theoretical frameworks dealing with ethnic minorities and multiculturalism.
Subsequently, the course will explore current multicultural policies and minority-focused policies within society. It will also examine institutional features of political systems related to minority issues.
The course will address the causes of ethnopolitical mobilization and outline potential solutions to challenges in multiethnic societies. Different models of public policy will be presented, focusing on citizenship, language rights, autonomy, federalism, and secession.
In the final part of the course, the emergence and functioning of ethnic political parties will be discussed, including an analysis of their roles and strategies within party systems. This section will also cover electoral behavior and electoral systems in divided societies.
The course will conclude with an overview of the role of international organizations in safeguarding minority rights from a global perspective.
(Czech version:) Kurz je určen pro zahraniční studenty a je vyučován v angličtině. Cílem kurzu je seznámit studenty se soudobými přístupy k řešení etnické diverzity a agendou ochrany práv minorit ve státním a mezinárodním měřítku. Na začátku kurzu budou představeny koncepty etnicity, etnické skupiny, národnosti, multietnického státu, etnické diverzity, etnického konfliktu a etnopolitické mobilizace, přičemž budou reflektovány soudobé teoretické koncepty zabývající se etnickými minoritami a multikulturalismem. Následně budou představeny soudobé politiky multikulturalismu a politiky zaměřené na minority ve společnosti. V návaznosti na to budou přiblížena institucionální specifika politických systémů související s problematikou minorit. V rámci kurzu budou rovněž rozebrány důvody etnopolitické mobilizace a budou nastíněny možnosti řešení otázek objevujících se v multietnických společnostech. Budou představeny varianty veřejných politik zaměřené na občanství, jazyková práva, autonomii, federalismus či secesi. V závěrečné části kurzu budou nastíněny důvody a souvislosti vzniku a působení etnických politických stran a budou analyzovány jejich role a strategie v rámci stranických systémů. V návaznosti na to bude zmíněno i téma volebního chování a volebních systémů v rozdělených společnostech. V závěru kurzu bude zmíněna role mezinárodních organizací v rámci zajištění práv minorit v globální perspektivě.
