Unit 3. Positionality and Responsibility
Section outline
-
This section turns the analytical tools around and applies them to you.
By the end of it you will be able to:
- describe your own position in a conflict, including the authority you hold and the risks you are not exposed to,
- distinguish procedural impartiality from substantive neutrality, and
- state a responsibility that is proportionate to your position rather than to the size of the problem.
The section has three parts: a fifteen-minute video lecture, a fifteen-minute private checklist, and a written note of eighty to a hundred words. Allow forty-five minutes in total. The checklist is private reflection and is not marked. The note is the second of the two pieces of work an instructor reads and replies to.
-
A fifteen-minute lecture on positionality, the limits of neutrality, and responsibility understood as what you are positioned to do rather than what you are to blame for (15 min).
-
Not required for completion, and not included in the three hours. These are for afterwards, if the section stayed with you.
