The main difference between work and play is motivation. One and the same thing can be perceived for someone as a game, for another as a work. It depends on the subjective feeling and the decision to play. The game is fun, the work is not.

Basic characteristics of playing

  • spontaneity
  • freedom
  • self-interest (the motive is not the result, but the process itself)
  • symbolism
  • connection with fantasy
  • emotional participation

Functions of the playing

  • Emerging - during the game develops motor skills, thinking, imagination ..
  • Cognitive - during the game, the child learns
  • Relaxation - while playing a child rests and relaxes
  • Compensatory - In the game, the child compensates for failures and inferiority complexes
  • Projective - the game reflects their wishes

Social development of playing

  1. Separate game - Children manipulate toys, watch the game of others.
  2. Parallel Game – (toddlers). Children play next to each other.
  3. Playing together - Older toddlers are able to play with other children but still do not cooperate.
  4. Cooperative Game - Only in preschool children leads to cooperation and competition, leadership and submission, conflict resolution and compromise with peers.
  5. A child from 8 years of age does not want to play alone and the company of other children is essential for him.
