MORPHOLOGICAL SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH TEXTS

This course is designed to provide you with the ability to orientate themselves in the grammatical system of English.

A number of new linguistic phenomena will be presented to you, such as "irregular sentences, ellipses, verbless clauses etc., which enables you to view the system of grammar in a more complex way.

The new grammar will be presented to you by means of various tasks, which if taken seriously, will deepen your insight into the system of English grammar.

In order to complete this course successfully you are supposed:

    1. to read an article dealing with a morphological or syntactic theme from Libuše Dušková’s Studies in the English Language, part 1, 2 (1999, Praha: Karolinum), and develop an essay based on it (approximately 3 pages) supported by your own examples of the phenomenon.

    2. to pass a credit test. For passing it you need at least 70 % of the total number of points.

You are supposed to submit the essay before sitting for the test, which will take part during the credit week. If you are not successful with the test, you can take a re-sit during the following exam period.

    Cíle

The main goals of this course can be summarized in following points:

    - to provide the students with the ability to orientate themselves in the grammatical system of English.

    - to enable them to avoid isolated and fragmental knowledge.

    - to interrelate both morphological and syntactic levels and thus stabilize and deepen knowledge

    - to make full use of their theoretical knowledge in their individual language performances

Having gone through the chapters and articles of this course the students are able:

    - to orientate themselves at the morphological and syntactic level of the English grammatical system;

    - to identify the typical features of the grammatical system of English as an analytical language;

    - to view the language material in a complex way, to realize the interrelations of language phenomena

  • RELEVANT RELATIONS BETWEEN MORPHOLOGICAL AND SYNTACTIC LEVEL IN THE SYSTEM OF THE ENGLISH GRAMMAR

This chapter is designed as an introduction to the course, so you are supposed to revise individual sentence types classified on the base of formal criteria and functional criteria (communicative functions), our second task will be to provide a theoretical description of syntactic and semantic structure of an English sentence - you will think of individual clause elements, their forms and semantic roles. On top of that all, you will be supposed to analyze an authentic English text from the point of view of syntax and morphology. Pay special attention to the description of the structure of individual main clauses, their obligatory and optional clause elements as well as the means of their realization.

    Cíle

This chapter is aimed at providing the students with the solid starting point for the following new grammar by revising the most relevant parts of the sentence analysis.

  • NEGATION IN ENGLISH

In this chapter you are provided with grammatical description of negation in English, means of expressing individual types of negation and the difference between them. You will also get information about the difference in expressing negation in sentences containing modals.

    Cíle

The main aim of this chapter is brushing up on the students’ so far knowledge of the phenomenon of negation in English and making them sure in using various ways of expressing individual types of negation.

  • NON-FINITE VERB PHRASES

In this chapter you are supposed to summarize and complete your theoretical knowledge of individual non-finite verb forms - infinitive, gerund, present and past participles. We simply use these forms as means of making complex verb phrases without thinking of their features and their relevance in the area of sentence structuring. This chapter will show you how these forms - actually heads of non-finite clauses function as means of sentence condensation.

    Cíle

The aim of this chapter is to make students get a deeper insight in the system of non-finite verb forms of an English verb and realize their relevant functions as means of sentence condensation.

  • VERBLESS CLAUSE

In this chapter you are supposed to deal with a structure containing no verbal element. You will study the internal structure of this syntactic unit and its functions in a sentence structure.

    Cíle

The aim of this chapter is to get the students realize what is the form of a verbless clause and how such a structure can be used in producing higher synactic units.

  • ELLIPSIS

In this chapter you are provided with the description of one of the means of cohesion in English - ellipsis - from the point of view of highly recognized linguists. You will have a wonderful opportunity to see how it is possible to look upon one and the same phenomenon from different points of view.

    Cíle

The aim of this chapter is to provide the students with the theoretical knowledge of this phenomenon of language, to let them see that one and the same phenomenon can be deals with from different point of view without excluding one another, and, to enable the students to make active use of this phenomenon.

  • AMBIGUITY IN ENGLISH

This chapter presents to you a topic of “advanced grammar” because it presumes your good knowledge of grammar and lexis of the English language; otherwise you wouldn’t be able to detect ambiguous structures nor would you be able to describe the phenomenon of ambiguity and provide acceptable interpretations.

    Cíle

The aim of the linguistic stuff in this chapter is to let students realize that their knowledge of English grammar is at a high level, since they are able to detect ambiguous structures and suggest as well as describe their interpretations.

  • IRREGULAR SENTENCES IN ENGLISH

In this chapter you are presented a detailed overview and formal description of various structures which labelled “irregular”, including areas of occurrence (registers). You will also consider reasons why these structures are among irregular- and non-sentences.

    Cíle

The aim of this chapter is to broaden students’ theoretical knowledge of structures which are out of the scope of usual description, and to make them include at least some of such structures into their potential active language.
